Fantastic for its evangelisation of teaching and Fermi problems, otherwise quite shallow. Compare it to ‘Story of Your Life’ by Ted Chiang, which feels like it goes much deeper in one dimension and as a result is much richer. Weir’s book also feels excessively American in its optimism – see the scene where an official stands trial with exasperation, and when they’re done with that they send the army into the trial room.
