The Everything Store: Jeff Bezos and the Age of Amazon

Brad Stone | 2013 | ★★☆☆☆
Read: January 6, 2022

The better business books read like whitepapers, the lesser like self-help guides. I found Stone’s book riveting, fast-paced, and well researched. I was also disappointed by the presence of what felt like emotional cliff-hangers, calls to action, and sections designed to be quoted.

‘The Everything Store’ references Bezos in its title and repeatedly spells out just how much Amazon is Bezos, and Bezos is Amazon. Yet I feel like it describes Bezos as if behind a veil. I am no closer to understanding Bezos and his many aspects in one unified theory. Sure I know he’s got gumption, he’s incredibly lucky, and he’s has daring optimism, but this was all conveyed as if watching him from a distance. I hope another writer can deliver a more intimate view.
