The Complete Maus

Art Spiegelman | 1980 | ★★★★★
Read: March 31, 2018

Beautifully illustrated and powerfully written. Spiegelman’s drawings have clear love and care devoted to each panel. Mice (Jews) are easily identifiable from one another despite being just that – mice. The style in which he draws scenes subtly shifts from moments of calm to moments of desperation among the mice but still distinctly that the horror of what is occurring stands out. You can feel the raw emotion, the sadness and anger in harsh thick strokes depicting the mice’s treatment. Moments of self-reflection from Spiegelman in his own comic, as he doubts whether this is the proper medium to convey such a message, doubt whether he’s just rehashing what has been said many times before, doubt as to whether anyone even wants to read such tragedy just add to the honesty of the story. Maus is a heartfelt masterpiece, completed with a loving and needful attention to the details while being aware of its removal from the events of the Holocaust and the subsequent guilt associated therewith.
