Death of a Salesman

Arthur Miller | 1949 | ★★★★☆
Read: May 13, 2017

A tragic and honest look at the American life. The American dream, false braggarts, and ruin. A true tragedy with just a glimmer of humour. It was fascinating to see the treatment of women by Arthur Miller, naming them ‘girl’ and ‘woman’ in the script and the only significant words spoken by Linda at Willy’s deathbed. This book is vast in its scope of coverage, from criticisms of the freedom so lauded by Americans caught in the snares of endless mortgage payments to the treadmill of work and its business environment sterile of sympathy and safety nets. It manages to touch upon them all. I look forward to seeing this in the theatre, it was sometimes confusing flitting between the past and the present with little indication of this in the text and I am sure a talented director could vigour and animation it deserves.
